Anti Aging Cream - Never Again - the Brutal Truth About Anti Aging Creams
It is extremely logical to expect an anti aging cream to remove the signs of aging from our faces, right? Wrong! Let's be straight: far too many anti aging products do not deliver anything close to what they promise. Far too many promises have been broken by cosmetical companies simply because they fail to develop a product that safely and effectively removes all signs of aging. Does this stop them from advertising their anti aging treatments as if they do - no it doesn't! Because desperate women keep buying their junk, they keep selling it.

Anti Aging Skin Care - Avoid These 3 Big Lies That Beauty Companies Often Use in Their Advertising
It's like clockwork. You open up a glossy fashion magazine and ... you get humiliated by those photos of glamorous models. Again. The anti aging skin care advertisers deliberately make you doubt your normal middle aged body. They get you worried that something is missing in your otherwise perfectly contented life. They almost convince you that you need their anti-aging skin care cream even though you are confident, hard working and appreciated by your family and friends who don't mind you are not like the super models. This is a cynical tactic of the big-name beauty advertisers ...

Anti-Aging and Benefits of Plastic Surgery
For most people plastic surgery won't be an option in their anti aging quest. For those who want to live longer they might not see any benefits in plastic surgery simply because it appears to be only a change of the external picture of the person. It's true that changes that will affect your inner self will have a greater affect on your ability to live longer than an external makeover whether in the form of plastic surgery or more simply by less intrusive forms of 'upgrade' such as makeup, hair color and styling and so on.

There is a lot of money to be made within the industry and manufacturers know that many people will pay exorbitant prices on anti aging skin care treatment products if they are marketed correctly. People will do what it takes to prevent the aging process from taking hold. This is why so many people spend ridiculous amounts of money on plastic surgery each year. The same reason leads many people to spend tons of money on an anti aging skin care product.

Anti Aging Skin Care Guide - Truths and Lies Revealed!
Every time you turn around you have to be careful not to trip over the latest and greatest new anti aging skin care guide. While some actually do offer fresh insight into anti aging skin care treatment, many are simply rehashing long believed fallacies and cure alls handed down. The first piece of advice that any anti aging skin care guide will give to you is that you need to stay out of the sun. Sound advice as most of the damage done to our skin over the years is directly attributed to UV exposure. If you look at an area of skin that would normally be covered as compared to one readily exposed to the sun, you will see a difference.

There Are Old People and Fat People, But Few Old Fat People
Look around you at the bodies of the extremely old - when was the last time you recall seeing an obese centenarian? Excess fat held over the years is a killer, and the oldest people are very rarely overweight. I noticed a paper today that works backwards from medical and mortality data to further support the same conclusion: There has been ongoing debate about the health risks associated with increased body weight among the elderly population. One issue has not been investigated thoroughly is that body weight changes over time, as both the reasons and results of, the development of chronic diseases and functional disabilities. Structural models have the ability to unravel the complicated simultaneous relationship between body weight, disability, and mortality along the aging process. Using longitudinal data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey from 1992 to 2001, we constructed a structural model to estimate the longitudinal dynamic relationship between weight, chronic diseases, functional status, and mortality among the aging population. A simulation of an age cohort from 65 to 100 was conducted to show the changes in weight and health outcomes among the cohorts with different baseline weight based on the parameters estimated by the model. The elderly...

Three Decades From Now
It takes 20 years, give or take, for a new technology to move through multiple cycles of development, commercialization, and competition necessary to evolve from experimental prototype to widespread maturity. A look back at the past few decades of medical progress suggests that 30 years is more likely in that field - there's one effect of regulation for you, a slowing of the technologies that manage to make it over the regulatory hurdle in the first place. What does this pace of progress in medicine mean for middle-aged and younger people today? It means that the 2030s will see widespread, cost-effective use of the medical technologies you presently read about in the science press. A small selection: Replacement organs will be grown to order from your own cells. Stem cells will be created, manipulated, and transplanted to direct extraordinary regeneration Age-damaged immune systems will be wiped clean and replaced afresh. Gene therapy will be a mature technology, and genetic disorders curable. Everyone will know their DNA sequence, and have access to a vast database of knowledge that describes risks, therapies, and best practices. Cancer will be detected early, and even late-stage metastasis cured with few side-effects by nanoparticle-based, viral, or...

Attitudes of Aging Researchers To Healthy Life Extension
I missed a social interest paper from earlier this year, in which gerontologists were questioned on their views of healthy life extension and longevity science. The abstract is a fair summary of what I've seen of ongoing debates on the subject: It is often assumed that there is broad public support for strong life extension research (i.e. research aimed at the dramatic extension of human life beyond the current maximum), and that there would be a near universal interest in using any life extending technologies that this research may produce. In this paper we report the opinions of researchers in ageing on the controversial promise of life extension, and compare these views. This paper describes the professional attitudes, personal interest and concerns expressed by Australian and international researchers in ageing (n = 14) as expressed during semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Researchers held varying opinions about the possibility of significantly extending human life. Some saw a limit to the extension of human life, while others did not. Some felt that research into the fundamental ageing process was a priority; others did not. Researchers tended to weigh up the potential risks and benefits of life extension with most expressing a personal interest in...

The Endocrine System, Longevity, and Methionine
A large portion of the aging research community is engaged in understanding the relationship between the endocrine system and longevity. The endocrine system is an extremely complex web of biochemical interactions, feedback loops, and specialized tissues that controls metabolism and growth. It is highly influential on the longevity of a species or an individual, but understanding this system is a vast and complex undertaking. I have no doubt that researchers will still be toiling at this labor when we're well into the era of tissue engineered replacement organs and early medical nanorobots. Some differences in life span between species can be ascribed to differences in endocrine configuration: The complex, highly integrative endocrine system regulates all aspects of somatic maintenance and reproduction and has been widely implicated as an important determinant of longevity in short-lived traditional model organisms of aging research. Genetic or experimental manipulation of hormone profiles in mice has been proven to definitively alter longevity. ... Here, we examine the available endocrine data associated with the vitamin D, insulin, glucocorticoid and thyroid endocrine systems of naturally long-living small mammals. Generally, long-living rodents and bats maintain tightly regulated lower basal levels of these key pleiotropic hormones than shorter lived rodents....

More Cryonics History From Depressed Metabolism
Aschwin de Wolf continues to build up a fascinating library of work on cryonics and its history at Depressed Metabolism. The early cryonicists of the 1960s were the cultural ancestors of the transhumanist movement, and thus also of many present initiatives in other areas of the healthy life extension community. It was the transhumanist community that helped launch the Methuselah Foundation with their early generosity in donations and volunteerism, for example. One of these days I have to mock up an evolutionary diagram of branching arrows to show the creation and diversification of pro-life-extension communities from the 1950s to the present. But back to cryonics: two new articles at Depressed Metabolism caught my eye, both looking at the early days. A Freezing Before Bedford's James Bedfordâs freezing in January 1967 is usually regarded as the first true cryonic suspension, done immediately after legal death under controlled conditions which, though primitive by todayâs standards, may have opened the possibility of eventual reanimation. Yet there was an earlier freezing that, while more problematic from the standpoint of viability, was nonetheless important in the beginning cryonics movement. Historical Steps Toward the Scientific Conquest of Death In December 1963 the Life Extension Society was...
Folate Plays A Key Role In Anti-aging Cognitive Techniques
Medical researchers have proven that high levels of folate can
slow the cognitive decline usually seen as people age. This
research was presented at the US-based Alzheimer's Association's
first conference on prevention of dementia. Folate is definitely
instrumental in anti-aging techniques for the brain.
The research suggested that otherwise healthy people can slow
declining brain function by taking double the recommended daily
dose of folate.
Scientists studied men and women 50-75 years of age taking 800
mcg of folate a day over a three year period. They found the
group scored much better in cognitive tests than their peers who
took the placebo. The supplement users also scored higher on
memory tests as much as 5.5 years younger than their
chronological age.
The study is the first to convincingly show folate can slow
cognitive decline and plays a key role in anti-aging techniques
for cognitive functioning. Since the study involved healthy
older people and not people with Alzheimer's symptoms, it does
not tell us if folate might ward off that disease. This is an
important question still unanswered.
Earlier studies suggested folate combined with other B vitamins
can reduce levels of homocysteine, which is an amino acid
thought to be one of the causes for onset of Alzheimer's
disease.
Researchers think we ought to be more conscious about the
health of our brain very much in the same way we think about the
health of our heart. Alzheimer's disease begins many, many years
before symptoms appear.
The researchers of this study say it is not clear how folate
works to protect the brain. It might be that it lowers
inflammation or plays a role in expression of dementia-related
genes.
Oranges, strawberries, dark green leafy vegetables and beans
are good sources of folate to include in a daily anti-aging
diet. Folate is also added to cereal and flour products in the
United States
.
The recommended daily dose of folate in the United States is
400 micrograms. Doctors have long advised women of childbearing
age to take folate supplements to ensure they get an adequate
daily dose.
This new research adds to the mounting evidence that an
anti-aging diet higher in folate provides protection against a
variety of diseases. For a long time now, scientists have felt
folate plays a role in dementia. Previous studies show people
with low folate levels are more at risk for heart disease and
decreased cognitive functioning.
Research also now suggests there are anti-aging ways to protect
the brain against age-related memory losses and Alzheimer's
disease. There are classes being offered by the Alzheimer's
Association to teach people techniques to protect the brain.
Some of those techniques include:
Exercise the brain: In youth, exercise for the brain is
acquiring good education. As a person begins to age, excellent
anti-aging brain exercises include working crossword puzzles,
learning to play an instrument or the game of chess and taking
classes helps to exercise the brain.
Social stimulation helps prevent decreased cognitive function
Physical activity: Having a bad memory has been linked to
heart disease and diabetes due to the clogged arteries that slow
blood flow to the brain. Exercise is helpful to all these
functions.
Experts recommend doing something mentally, physically and
socially stimulating all at the same time. An example would be
coaching your child's ball team or taking a dance class.
A heart healthy anti-aging diet is also good for brain healthy
anti-aging.

The Anti Aging System
Everyone we seem to consider beautiful in our eyes has a system of their own anti aging system. However we are inundated by a myriad of systems that are both natural with little or no side effects to chemicals or surgeries that can have many side effects. But it's finding a system that works for you.

Starting an Anti Aging Treatment While You're Young
Most of us wait until we see the signs of aging in the mirror wondering what happened, when did it happen and where were you when it happened? Oh right, you were living life day to day that the signs of aging just slipped on past unnoticed until one day you stopped and looked. But this doesn't have to be the case if we begin at a young age to take care of our skin. By saying young it doesn't mean childhood, but starting a regiment as a teenager is a good place to start considering many teens begins having troubles with their skin such as acne.

Anti-Aging Supplements & Vitamins
It is theorized that the body ages not because it's getting older but because free radicals are building within our bodies that causes the body to age. Depending on how much free radicals the body takes on determines how much damage the body received in the form of aging. And thereby can be theorized why people age differently. One way to help combat this aging process is by adding anti aging supplements into our diet. Of course the best anti aging supplement is the natural foods that are rich in antioxidants that we eat. However when that isn't enough many of us turn to anti aging supplements that can be found on the market.

On the Psychology of Longevity Advocacy
An interesting post over at In Search of Enlightenment: Firstly, support for legitimate longevity science is hampered by the vast number of products currently being sold as "anti-aging" therapies without any science to substantiate their claims. See here, for example. And thus one has to be very careful when convincing people that (1) aging is something that ought to be retarded (as it increases our risks of morbidity and mortality); and yet at the same time convince them that (2) we might actually be able to slow human aging and yet (3) none of the current products being sold on the market have been demonstrated to do this (indeed, they might be harmful). The latter point is emphasized, for example, in this excellent piece in the Scientific American by Jay Olshansky, Leonard Hayflick and Bruce A. Carnes. Now if one is pressing (as indeed I am) (1) and (2), it is of course understandable that people will be want to do something about aging (and thus be tempted to violate (3)). But when asked "So what can I do to slow aging?" my response is "(a) support increasing the amount of public funding we invest in the biology of aging...

The Murky Depths of Parkinson's Disease
You might recall that the chemical alpha-synuclein is an aggregate that appears to be a proximate cause of Parkinson's disease (and like many biochemical aggregates, its buildup is slowed by the practice of calorie restriction). Researchers are delving deeper into the chain of mechanisms: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have elevated levels of the protein called alpha-synuclein in their brains. As the protein clumps, or aggregates, the resulting toxicity causes the death of neurons that produce the brain chemical dopamine. Consequently, nerves and muscles that control movement and coordination are destroyed. The researchers discovered that the activity of three genes that control the synthesis of heme, the major component of hemoglobin that allows red blood cells to carry oxygen, precisely matched the activity of the alpha-synuclein gene, suggesting a common switch controlling both. The scientists then found that a protein called GATA-1, which turns on the blood-related genes, was also a major switch for alpha-synuclein expression, and that it induced a significant increase in alpha-synuclein protein. Finally, they demonstrated that a related protein -- GATA-2 -- was expressed in PD-vulnerable brain cells and directly controlled alpha-synuclein production. Researchers are taking a similar tack to that of mainstream Alzheimer's research now...
